  20. 15 May 2007 at 10:47am

The new album by The Crimea, available for free download at this link. They made it free after being dropped by their record label. Frankly, only the last track has the swagger, scale and invention that I originally associated with them upon hearing the first version of their “White Russian Galaxy” in 2003. I have a theory that every band has one single great song in them, and I suspect that, for The Crimea, “White Russian Galaxy” might be it. I need to give this album a few more listens. Go and download it. But listen to the Psychomodo-style riff and stomp of one of the great lost pop songs of the 2000s, while you’re at it:

  21. Golden Bear :: To the Farthest Star
  22. 7 Nov 2007 at 8:30am

    golden-bear.jpg

All it took was Golden Bear to Get Lasso’d by our friends at Daytrotter for us to revisit SXSW and the party that made the terrace/roof collapse. It was at said party (and prior to all hell breaking loose) that I crossed paths with Chris Gregory while we mutually embraced the complimentary Lone Star Beer and Dewars Whiskey.

He easily joined my circle of friends as we talked for what seemed like an eternity though probably only lasted thirty minutes. During that time he mentioned his Texas based band Golden Bear and promised to send the album along to me once the craziness of the festival died down. Sure enough it appeared promptly and I managed to load it up, play it, and never mention it here.

Ultimately, To the Farthest Star was bound to find you whether I mentioned it on MoB or not. It’s got the character and charm to find it’s way through the music itself, but I’ll go ahead and do my part just in case. Released on C-Side Records you can check out the two tracks made available below for a great starting point. My thanks to Chris for the good company in Austin and apologies for the delay in mentioning his truly worthy band.

  23. Abell (distant galaxy mix)
  24. 29 Dec 2007 at 1:42am
A few weeks ago I bumped into this a cappella by c.layne and was immediately mesmerized. There’s a hypnotic quality about those vocals.

Since c.layne 217;s original version is quite experimental, I decided to play it more straight.

There were some technical challenges because in the posted track, the vocals are already mixed into a final stereo mix, including harmonies and effects. So I went mostly with the flow on those.

However I was able to stray from the original chord progression quite a bit, while still respecting the given harmonies. That was actually an interesting process and took me a while to come up with a chord progression I was happy with.

And as I often do, I couldn’t help but add just a tiny bit of extra harmonization in the bridge (which is the overlay of a smooth vocal part over a more staccato part). This involved separating the stereo tracks into two mono tracks, because the two parts were panned a bit left/right. And then I took the resulting mono track with the smooth vocals being quite a bit louder than the staccato one’s and ran them though my trusty VoiceLive harmonizer box with my chosen chords. However the staccato vocals were still there (softly) and responsible for small artifacts. So I EQ’d those artifacts out as best as I could, and hopefully the result is reasonably ok.

So thanks to c.layne for posting this track - I had a lot of fun jamming with it!

  25. SXSW: Friday

    white-denim.jpg

Yesterday started off with Lightspeed Champion at the Stereogum/Paste party at one of the nicest (and air conditioned!) venues in town. His set contained a lot from Falling Off the Lavender Bridge, his intentions to get a Star Wars tattoo, and a Weezer cover. Filled up on the best nachos ever and made our way down Red River to the Mohawk for The Hot Freaks showcase put on by our friends at Daytrotter, Aquarium Drunkard, You Ain’t No Picasso, Largehearted Boy, Chromewaves, Gorilla vs. Bear, and My Old Kentucky Blog.

Highlights were plentiful throughout the day, with early surprises being The Dodos and Ola Padrida. We finally got around to seeing the Bowerbirds for the first time, which sounded just perfect. One of the best acts I’ve seen over the time here is without a doubt White Demin, who’ve long been favored and recommended, but seeing this band live is definitely the closing factor on these guys. I thought their day set was so good, I just had to see them again as they closed down our evening with a hot and heavy set at Club DeVille. Best description? Try James Brown fronting a garage punk outfit.

Jens Lekman was gorgeous and engaging as ever, revealing the entire story behind “A Postcard to Nina” from his MoB approved Night Falls Over Kortedala. Muzzle of Bees couldn’t be more excited to present Jens in both Madison and Milwaukee at the end of this month. I had great expectations already, but yesterday really cemented what a captivating performer he is.

Mad Decent and IHEARTCOMIX had a party atop a parking garage complete with DJ sessions from Hood Internet and performances by Diplo, Flosstradamus and Spank Rock. I really wanted to catch Amanda Blank, but we had other plans and had to leave the party behind, which was gearing up to be quite a night.

I missed seeing Bobby Bare Jr by about a half an hour, but stuck around long enough to take in the Langhorn Slim and White Rabbits. I’m really excited about the upcoming self-titled Langhorn Slim record, due April 29th, judging by the enthusiastic crowd (including Elijah Wood) and the number of fans that found their way onto the stage for the last number, plenty of others are going to be looking forward to it as well.

Lots of other great times throughout the day with a slew of great people

  27. Snow Falling
  28. 13 Feb 2007 at 6:33pm

    * Galaxie 500: Listen, The Snow Is Falling (12.5 mb)
From This Is Our Music : Rykodisc

    * The Mountain Goats: Snow Song (3.0 mb)
From Bitter Melon Farm : Ajax Records

    * Windy & Carl: Snowing (12.0 mb)
    From Introspection : Blue Flea

The theme today, if you couldn’t already tell, is snow falls. With the recent inundations in New York and where I am in the Midwest, I figure we all need some snow related songs as we bunker down and prepare to not leave the house.

First off is Galaxie 500 with their stunning remake of a Yoko Ono lullabye, Listen, The Snow Is Falling. They slowly unravel the original and put it back together their own way. Next up, we’ve got The Mountain Goats in a rare understated moment, with Snow Song. And last but not least, we’ve got space/drone rockers Windy & Carl with their take on the theme, Snowing. So, hopefully everyone is staying warm and cuddled.

  29. On the potentially sorry state of second science fiction hand book stores in ...
  30. 7 Jul 2008 at 12:01am
    Listen
Following a recommendation from Danny, I went and checked out Galaxy Books on York Street during one of my lunch times. The review says they have a good second hand section, and I am still hunting for some old Asimovs. Unfortunately, it was a waste of time. The second hand section must of only had about 100 books in it, and none of them were interesting. They did have an awesome new section though, but I figure buying books from the 1950s new is cheating.

One book I might be forced to buy new is Asimov's The Complete Robot. I can't find it in any second hand bookstores that I've tried, and its not even available new in the US. Inexplicably though, it is easily available new in Australia. I am not sure why. It seems like a shame to spend nearly $25 on a book though, so I am not sure what I will do about that one yet.

I will continue my hunt for a good second hand book store in the Sydney CBD. Any recommendations?

  31. Dukudu: meine eBay Geheimformel
  32. 27 Jun 2007 at 3:23pm

Muahahahaha… Dukudu.de wurde für 43.208 Euro ersteigert und ich hatte die Nacht zuvor auf 43.000 Euro getippt. Was heißt hier getippt?

  35. NYC Crowds Dance Too Much, Part 2
  36. 13 Feb 2007 at 10:24am
I can't recall how I celebrated Roe V. Wade in 2006 -or 2005 for that matter. Nearly a year to the day [give or take six] from this year's Planned Parenthood benefit with the Wrens, I caught them at Bowery Ballroom for the Onion Holiday Party. We're still not sure which holiday exactly, but Roe V. Wade seems about right. This year brought the band back for another gig from their remote hideout in New Jersey to play the newly outfitted Knitting Factory: new sound system, new lights, new go-go dancers. Unfortunately I wasn't awestruck by them as before, but even then when a band achieves such high standards as they do, even an off night is still an on night. Hopefully 2007 will be the year of new material for them. Pro create, my dear Wrens.

Precisely four days later Clap Your Hands Say Yeah released their own new creation to moderate approval, and precisely one day one hour and a few odd minutes later, the band played a special Benefit for Insomniacs show at the Mercury Lounge. Still groggy from nap time I fit in after work, I couldn't work up enough neurons or BAC to fully appreciate the event. No craziness from the sleep-craving crowd. No wild debauchery at the hands of Alec Ounsworth. Just simple mid-week 2AM clappery and yeahing. It was a gentler version of last year's electrifying Bowery shows.

Come that weekend, I dumped shows into my night like a big truck. First on my itinerary can Sure Juror at Sin-e and they surprised me by being a rather tight ensemble for a band with so little live experience [disclosure: I know the bassist]. They had multiplied themselves to seven (7) members and I dubbed them the "Seven Gallants" after remotely reminded me of the duo of Gallants, less tasers. I popped over to Mercury to see the record release of Mancino which was also pleasant and reminding me I need to listen to that album more [disclosure: I know the guitarist]. From there I went over to Rockwood to see the Mugs who were absolutely brilliant. The sound system in that room is crazy and really needs to be praised every day. Go see something there. Anything. Back to Sin-e for Go Station and finally off to Canal Room for Escort. The last two I didn't care for as much, [and I don't really know anyone in either bands], but I was getting tired and unsober. Escort had seemingly a few dozen members in their band. Is that Antibalas hidden in the marimba section?" I wondered. Hey Look! It's Schtoompah the funny Austrian on tuba! Maybe I do know someone in this band.

As January was drawing to a close, I visited the Knitting Facorty Old Office early one Tuesday evening to see Nullsleep. The room was rather full so we couldn't see him tweaking his gameboys, but like Girl Talk, there wouldn't be much to see. I loved it for the duration he played, but couldn't justify staying to see the next act. There's only so many midi notes one's ear can hear in a night. Nullsleep played this track bringing joy to the lost child in my soul:

    Nullsleep - Galaxy Tonight [mp3]

It's melody is so happy and sweet but tinged with longing. Someday [far far away] I'd like it played at my funeral. From that show I headed over to Bowery for the fateful Peter Bjorn and John show, but we'll have to leave that for next time.
