  3. Brain Storm! Business Podcast: Warcraft Business Strategies

In today's business podcast we will brainstorm about business strategies from the multi-player game, Warcraft.

Who would have thought that you could learn such great business lessons from a massively multi-player game? Blizzard Entertainment uses great strategies to make 1 billion dollars a year and keep over 50% for profits.

First of all, they start with a $20 package to install the game.

Then add on a $15/month subscription package. Multiply that by the 8 million people that are addicted to this game, and you have a business success story.

What happens when you've seen it all?

You buy a $40 expansion pack and keep paying $15/month. I would have thought you might cut someone slack who has been addicted to your game and paid so much. Instead, they seem to make the most of their known addiction, and charge them twice as much for the expansion pack as they did for the starter pack.

So learn how we can apply these lessons to our own businesses in this week's Brain Storm! session.

In today's Brain Storm! Business Podcast, we will discuss the lessons I learned at the APSE Conference about helping people with disabilities get employment or start their own business.

I learned so much, it's all crammed in my brain. It was an experience that launched that much more brainstorming, as well. It also confirmed that this is where my heart and passion is - helping people with disabilities who WANT to have their own business REACH THEIR GOAL.

I learned about Influencers in marketing, for better or for worse.

I am so naive. I didn't realize how much power some people have over the lives of other people. In the bureaucratic world that people with disabilities are forced to live in, other people can actually tell them, "No, you can never have your own business", and stop people from doing it. Well, stop some people - not David Taylor! Read more about him here.

David and his business, Race CAR Waterboy, are perfect examples of why you and I have NO EXCUSES not to be living our dreams.

David gets to spend all of his work time at NASCAR events, providing water bottles to people who don't want to wait in line with people who also want food. He knows the drivers and owners, and even uses his contacts to help other people with disabilities. He is living his dream - what is our excuse???

So I encourage you to listen to what I learned from this conference, and from David Taylor and Judy (his mom), about pursuing your passions and building your business.

  7. Brain Storm! Business Podcast: The Importance of Design In Your Business, spo...
  8. 8 Oct 2007 at 12:46pm

In today's Brain Storm! business podcast, we will discuss the importance of design in your business, from conception, through production, to marketing and consumption.

We talk about Fast Company's article on Yves Behar, and there are some great ideas to discuss. His points on not following the crowd, and the impossibility of getting the best design from concensus, should really make us think about our standard ways of determining what's "good".

You are who you hang out with in the business world.

I was really interested in some of the trivia in the article, like who his original partners with and what they later went on to create. It is amazing that 3 unknowns (at one time) should gather together, only to separate and become unbelievably successful in their separate rights. They all created items that are now, in many realms, household words. Amazing!

He challenged Coca Cola, and was hired because of it.

From his days as a business slum lord (as he called it), to being involved in designing the $100 computer, to partnering with new companies for a stake in the profits, Yves has a lot to teach us. I hope you will really take time to think through what you can apply from what we learn this week.

Until next week (and looking forward to the FREE Online International Podcasting Expo, April 18 & 19, 2008), have a great week, and put some of those ideas into practice!

Click here to listen to the podcast.

In today's Brain Storm! Business Podcast, we will review why the Wii has trounced the XBox 360 and PlayStation gaming systems, and what business lessons we can learn from Nintendo.

What do you get when you combine a non-threatening remote with wi-fi and cute little cartoon renderings of you and your friends? You get Wii - a gaming system that you can't find to save your life. Nintendo is making over 1 million of them a month, and still can't keep up with the demand. Unlike all other games that people line up to buy at Christmas time and then sales die off after January, the Wii remains elusive and highly sought-after.

A game your grandmother could play (and may possibly be playing right now)?

You betcha. Wii consoles are found in nursing homes, on cruises, all over the place. Why? Because Nintendo decided that the competition was NOT Sony and Microsoft. It was the indifference of people who don't care a thing about gaming - like me.

Blue Ocean business strategies win again.

Instead of playing in the kiddie pool with all of the other children, Nintendo has waded out into the ocean where no one else will venture. They are turning current technological convention on its ear by NOT increasing their prices and stuffing expensive geeky stuff into their games. They are actually making them CHEAPER with off of the shelf parts, instead of proprietary technology like the other players.

So many business lessons, so little time...

So you'll have to listen to discover what we can learn from Nintendo's business strategies and successes. You'll also find out what body parts to protect from danger while playing Wii. I encourage you to just go to a local gaming store and try it out like I did. You may find out it's just your cup of tea.

Until our next business podcast, do something about your brainstorming ideas!

  13. Prefuse 73
  14. 28 Nov 2007 at 11:20pm

p77mu.jpgI’ve found myself listening to a lot of Prefuse 73 lately. It’s amazing how versatile this music is for me. I can listen to in intensely and let myself become engrossed in it… but I can also just hang out with friends and let it chill in the background. It works in the gym, but also works while studying. The only time it doesn’t really work is on the subway (because there are too many quiet nuances that get drowned out by squealing subway breaks).

Prefuse 73 is actually a recording name for Scott Herren, who records under a few other names (each name carries a different tone for defining the project). The Prefuse 73 stuff is definitely my favorite. The music is often described as “glitch”… which just means, a constantly moving mix of some hip-hop/electronica/rock sampling. Another example of glitch would be Girl Talk (an artist I live-blogged while at his show).

The two albums I have are One Word Extinguisher and Surrounded by Silence. If you’ve never heard of Prefuse 73 before, I definitely recommend starting with One Word Extinguisher, but I think that Surrounded by Silence is very underrated, especially for awesome the hip hop samples. Surrounded by Silence is louder, and it earns its intensity.

Check out “Busy Signal” off of One Word Extinguisher. Prefuse 73 just passed through NYC on tour, and I really regret not going. I’m hooked; come join my addiction.
